Phu Thu Tunnel Waterproofing Project

The Phu Thu Intersection construction project and its connecting road in Tien Hiep Commune, Phu Ly City, Ha Nam Province, is a key transportation initiative. Covering an area of over 34 ha and with a total investment of nearly 1,400 billion VND from the local budget, the project began in May 2023 and is expected to be completed by December 2025.

The project investor is Ha Nam Province Construction Investment Project Management Board. Construction is being carried out by a consortium comprising Vinaconex and Trung Chinh Construction and Trading Co., Ltd. Vinh Hung Trading, Consulting, and Construction Joint Stock Company is serving as a subcontractor, responsible for supplying materials and executing the tunnel waterproofing work starting from October 2024.

Waterproofing plays a vital role in protecting the structure from groundwater infiltration, humidity, water leakage, soil erosion, and chemical damage.

The waterproofing solution for the Phu Thu intersection underpass and connecting road in Tien Hiep commune consists of a 3-layer system:

Type 1 Waterproofing Layer: Pre-applied HDPE membrane, fully bonded to the concrete and installed at the tunnel base during concrete pouring.
Type 2 Waterproofing Layer: After completing the concrete structure, a self-adhesive, modified bitumen-based membrane is cold-applied to the tunnel walls, pump station walls, and the top slab of the closed tunnel.
Type 3 Waterproofing Layer: A two-component acrylic polymer cement-based coating is applied to waterproof the upper surface of the tunnel base and pile heads.
With extensive experience in urban tunnel waterproofing projects in Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vinh Hung is accelerating construction progress under the motto of “overcoming sun and rain”. The construction team operates in “three shifts, four crews,” ensuring timely completion of the tunnel waterproofing, with handover expected by April 30, 2025.

The Phu Thu Intersection is a particularly significant project for Ha Nam Province. It is designed and constructed as a three-level interchange:

Level 1: A 6-lane tunnel of Cau Gie – Ninh Binh Expressway, built to the expressway’s adjusted planning specifications.
Level 2: A roundabout with a 40-meter radius and four branches, connecting the expressway with Ring Road 5 to facilitate local traffic.
Level 3: An overpass for Ring Road 5 – Capital Region, crossing above the Cau Gie – Ninh Binh Expressway.
Upon completion, the project will significantly improve connectivity and trade between Ha Nam and other regions. It is expected to create strong development momentum and attract investment to the province. The Ha Nam Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board has instructed all contractors to prioritize quality, accelerate progress, and aim for project completion by August 2025, in time to commemorate National Day (September 2, 2025) and the XXI Congress of the Ha Nam Provincial Party Committee.
