PRIME MINISTER NGUYEN TAN DUNG ISSUED ORDER TO START THE BIGGEST BRIDGE IN VIETNAM
On the morning of September 10, 2013, in Dong Thap province, the Ministry of Transport solemnly held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Vam Cong bridge across the Hau River - an important component of the project Connecting the central region of the Mekong Delta.
This will be one of the two largest and most modern cable-stayed bridges in Vietnam. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung attended and issued an order to start this important project.
Vam Cong bridge project has an investment capital of nearly VND 5,700 billion, from preferential ODA capital of the Korean Government and reciprocal capital of the Vietnamese Government.
According to the project, Vam Cong bridge is designed with 4 lanes for motor vehicles and 2 lanes for rudimentary vehicles with medians, safety strips... with a total length of nearly 3km and a design speed of 80km/h.
The Prime Minister stated a directive at the groundbreaking ceremony
Vam Cong Bridge will be located about 2.5km from the existing Vam Cong ferry terminal downstream and about 48km from Can Tho Bridge upstream. The two ends of the bridge will be located on the territory of Lap Vo district - Dong Thap province and Thot Not district in the territory of Can Tho city. Vam Cong bridge is expected to be completed by the end of 2017, after 48 months of construction.
The package to build Vam Cong bridge is one of 5 components of the project "Connecting the central area of the Mekong Delta”, with a total investment of USD 850 million. This is a project that contributes to completing the road network, promoting economic development and strengthening security and defense of the Southwest region. The whole project has a total length of 78km, passing through the localities: Long An, Dong Thap, Can Tho and An Giang.
The project of Connecting the center of Mekong Delta is co-financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Australian Government, Korean Government and the counterpart funds of Vietnamese Government.
Prime Minister issues order to start construction of Vam Cong bridge
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Mr. Le Minh Hoan - Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee excitedly said: Today is not only a happy day for the people of Dong Thap, but also a happy day for millions of people in the Mekong Delta. , who have placed great expectations on this project. They believe that the completed bridge will create a strong driving force for the development of all aspects of traffic - economy - culture - society for the Southwest region.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung emphasized: "Recognizing the urgent needs for several years, the Government, the Ministry of Transport, relevant ministries and agencies have actively prepared the conditions to invest in the construction of Vam Cong bridge project, from the planning stage, then arrange capital and start construction. Our country is still poor, it is very difficult to arrange such a large capital. On behalf of the Government, I thank the contributions of international friends, the Governments of Korea and Australia. This bridge deserves to be a symbol of Vietnam-Korea friendship.”
Design of Vam Cong bridge project
In this spirit, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung requested the investor and related units to ensure the construction of the project on schedule, with absolute quality and safety. The Prime Minister directed: “The Ministry of Transport needs to strictly control so that Vam Cong bridge is built with the right quality and schedule and must be absolutely safe. Localities must strictly implement guidelines and policies for the people in site clearance.” The Prime Minister also noted that localities in the Mekong Delta continue to pay attention to mobilizing resources for building infrastructure investment, especially transport infrastructure, associated with rural construction and socio-economic development, improving material and spiritual life for local people.
The Vam Cong ferries then will only be in memory
Along with Can Tho bridge, the upcoming Vam Cong bridge will be the second bridge across Hau River, and they are the two largest bridges in Vietnam at the moment.
It is known that in October 2013, Cao Lanh bridge over Tien River was also started construction with the same scale as Vam Cong bridge. After that, the Government will build a highway connecting Cao Lanh bridge to Vam Cong bridge, and to the transport system in the area, then will promote the full efficiency that infrastructure projects bring.
