The "Trillion-Dollar Intersection" Project in Ho Chi Minh City Officially Opens to Traffic

Construction of the An Phu traffic intersection in Thu Duc City—considered the most critical and largest intersection in Ho Chi Minh City—began at the end of 2022. The project has a total investment of over 3,400 billion VND and features a three-level design: an underpass, ground-level roads, and an overpass. Notably, construction of the HC1 tunnel began urgently in November 2023, overcoming numerous challenges related to site conditions, technical complexity, and weather.
The project is managed by the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board. Vinh Hung’s role as a special subcontractor included both supplying materials and executing the entire waterproofing scope for the tunnel.

Waterproofing plays a crucial role in the An Phu Tunnel project, protecting the structure from water intrusion through the bottom slab, walls, and roof of the tunnel. This not only extends the lifespan of the project but also enhances its durability and aesthetics.Waterproofing plays a crucial role in the An Phu Tunnel project, protecting the structure from water intrusion through the bottom slab, walls, and roof of the tunnel. This not only extends the lifespan of the project but also enhances its durability and aesthetics.
The waterproofing system includes a 1.7 mm thick TPO-based membrane wrapped around the bottom slab, tunnel walls, and roof. It is combined with waterstopping tape, expanding rubber, joint sealants, and reinforcement panels at critical points such as expansion and construction joints—creating a fully sealed system to prevent groundwater infiltration.
With strong technical capacity and extensive experience in waterproofing for urban tunnels in Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vinh Hung executed the project with great speed and dedication. Embracing the spirit of “overcoming sun and rain,” the team worked in “three shifts, four teams” to ensure timely completion, meeting the investor’s schedule requirements.
This is the first completed component of the An Phu three-level intersection project. It directly connects the Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway to Mai Chi Tho Street, enabling vehicles traveling from Dong Nai to the city center to bypass traditional congestion points such as Nguyen Thi Dinh and Dong Van Cong.
