Video: Solution to reinforce and stabilize positive slope surface to prevent rockfall

12/07/2024 09:37:23
Rockfalls and landslides pose significant risks along expressways, roads, and mountain passes. These geological hazards result from rocks with varying compositions, properties, degrees of weathering, and joint conditions. Whether during rainy or dry seasons, rockfall hazards endanger people, vehicles, and construction projects, impacting overall safety and the economy of the country.

To reinforce and stabilize the positive slopes and mitigate rockfall risks, either "rigid" or "flexible" engineered systems are typically used in Vietnam.

Rigid system typically includes:
+ Shotcrete-soil nailing technique

+ Shotcrete reinforced with welded steel mesh and combined with rock anchors

+ Concrete beams frame

In addition to advantages, many shortcomings appeared not long after operation such as easily damaged and fractured slope surfaces, not being eco-friendly, altering the natural landscapes, etc. Besides, the rigid systems in many instances were not able to cater for the problem of underground water pressure as well as the direct impact of rainfall water on the slope surface.

In order to mitigate the socio - economic challenges in reinforcing and stabilizing positive slopes and rockfall and hydrogeological risks, flexible systems using high-strength steel meshes by Maccaferi from Italy - have been effectively applied in projects globally.
