Built in 1974 and completed in mid-1985, Thang Long Bridge stands as a landmark symbol of the friendship between Vietnam and the Soviet Union. Alongside Nhat Tan and Vinh Thinh bridges, Thang Long Bridge is a vital infrastructure link connecting Hanoi with the northern provinces. The bridge features a double-deck structure: the upper deck accommodates four vehicle lanes, while the lower deck serves trains and non-motorized vehicles. Possessing a highly complex structure, it constantly endures heavy and expanding traffic loads, alongside rail traffic loads. After more than 20 years of service, the bridge deck suffered severe damage; the bonding between the asphalt concrete and the waterproofing layer on the steel deck deteriorated, leading to slippage, transverse and diagonal cracking, and asphalt shoving. Despite undergoing two major repairs and regular maintenance, deterioration persisted.<\/p>\n
Following two years of extensive research, the comprehensive repair plan for the Thang Long Bridge deck proposed by the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam was approved by the Ministry of Transport. The total project investment reached VND 269.3 billion, sourced from the state economic budget for national highway management and maintenance.<\/p>\n
